Purity Ring is an electronic duo formed in Edmonton, Canada, consisting of lyricist and singer Megan James and producer Corin Roddick. Here are 10 things you might not know about them!

  • Purity Ring announced the album's release on April 23, 2012, along with the album's first promotional single 'Obedear'. The album's lead single, 'Belispeak', was released on May 29, 2012, with a video following two days later. ' Fineshrine' was released as the album's second promotional single on June 20, to acclaim from critics, highlighting it as a standout from the album.
  • Shrines is the debut album by Purity Ring, a Halifax/Montreal-based duo comprised of Corin Roddick and Megan James. Purity Ring make lullabies for the club, drawing equally from airy 90's R&B, lush dream pop, and the powerful, bone-rattling immediacy of modern hip hop.

10. They Didn't Plan On Making Music Long Term

The band released their first song, 'Ungirthed' in 2011 but didn't have any plans beyond that.

9. They Sold Music Equipment to Fund Their First Album, Shrines

They had to make big sacrifices in order to finance their debut album Shrines, which was released in July 2012. 7. Unique Lighting Design for Live Shows

Purity Ring’s live show is captivating. The centrepiece is Roddick’s custom made instrument that doubles as synthesiser and percussion apparatus. It has the look of something slightly unbelievable, almost CGI, a tree-like futuristic light-up stands that are hit and interpret various tones and sounds. (Source)

Track #3 on Danny Brown’s album Old, features Megan James on vocals, and Corin Roddick on production. 25 Bucks illustrates his parents' struggle for money that eventually became his own struggle.

5. The Name of the Band Isn't A Reference to Religion

Corin says in an interview with Electronic Beats, 'The way you might first interpret it, not thinking about it beyond just being words, it’s how you are supposed to interpret it. That’s actually good. For people for whom English isn’t a first language, or aren’t from North America where this actual purity ring item exists.'

4. A Majority of the Lyrics Are Pulled From Megan's Diary Entries

'This isn’t confession, I’m not pouring my heart out in a desperate plea to be heard and understood. It is just my thoughts and experiences as source material; it isn’t about me working through something,” explains Megan in an interview with Dummy Mag.

3. Mutual Friends

Purity Ring was introduced to Ab-Soul by fellow collaborator Danny Brown. 'I was put onto to Purity Ring by Danny Brown, since he would always play their album, Shrines on the tour bus,' Ab-Soul tells Exclaim! 'He was also working with them at the time, and I'm a fan of their music so I reached out and we got it done while they were here in L.A.' Corin Roddick handled production for the track, 'God's Reign (ft. SZA)' from Ab-Soul's third album, 'These Days...'

2. Witness: The Collaboration

Megan and Corin co-wrote and produced three songs ('Mind Maze', 'Miss You More', and 'Bigger Than Me') on Katy Perry's 2017 album, Witness. Purity Ring was also direct support onWitness: The Touron the North American leg from November 7th, 2017 to December 20th, 2017.
